This week I worked in the editing bay with Josue Cruz. To be in editor of film, no matter what kind, you have to have an eye for it. The story must be told even without words. There are a lot of people who are un able to hear and need to see what is going on. Someone could be busy and in a public place where they only can watch the video clip.
Photographers are the ones who go out and retrieve the footage. There is a sequence that they have to follow when getting the footage. Wide, medium, and tight shots are needed from all angles to give the editor as much variety as need. Once photogs come back into the station, their footage goes into editing. The editors have to follow the script that either a reporter has written or a producer. Editors create VOs, SOT VOs, and Packages. The editors have a basic check list to follow; make sure to hit time mark, natural sound, and making the footage easy on the eyes of the viewers.
This week I was able to create a VO and SOT VO. Before I started, I needed to create a new project. Always create that first, that way your editing will save and not be lost. I learned how to retrieve data from TONS and photogs into Final Cut 10. Each clip has to be three seconds long before moving on to the next. If on clip has no sound and the other one is blasting, making sure that it fades in and out is something important and that I learned. Lastly, paying attention to the height of each image in each clip is very important as well as using a few dissolves. Those are also others way of making it easy on the viewer’s eyes.
Learning from Cruz was very necessary for me to do. He instilled valuable information into a future reporter. Basic, quick, and professional editing information is what all reporters on the go have to know. Now that things are leaning more toward one-man band or MMJ, I feel very prepared when it comes to editing. I am looking forward to next week.
