This week I had the opportunity to go out with another reporter photog. Reporters gather their stories through various sources. Having phone numbers is very important to keep in contact with people with in an area that a story could use them in an interview. Photographers and reporters have to know what the story is about in order to prepare for the right questions to use in an interview. Although some reporters have prompted questions, they also like to use follow up questions that can lead to more authentic answers and responses.
When doing a story, reporters may need more SOT. The best way to get that on such short notice is MOS. This technique allows you as a reporter to take your story to the public before it is aired. MOS is not as easy as it sounds. A lot of people do not want to be on camera. Some people will flat out say no. It can be a bit discouraging, but then there is always that one person who is willing to give their opinion and the best SOT.
Preparing to go live can be very eventful. Making sure that the camera is in a good position and the Live U is up and running properly has to be done in advance. Waiting at the last minute can make a photog miss his cue and can be penalized for it. Haste makes waste and can result in equipment being broken or slightly damaged. Also having the mic in place to receive good sound is always good for the photog to have. It will enhance the live feed.
Working with Kelly and Sean was very refreshing. I learned that interviewing strangers can be challenging, but also a way of meeting great people in the community. Never give up when doing a story. You as the reporter have a job to give the people a story that will not only inform them, but allow them to feel connected. That is why it is very important for the photogs to capture great footage to also do the same as the reporter.
